Evanston Children’s Choir -- Family Choir

Evanston Children’s Choir

This semester Family Choir is trying something different, and we’re throwing the doors open wide, inviting everyone to join for FREE! Fall Semester’s Family Choir class will be a special workshop on the Philadelphia Soul Label sound run by our own Bryan Johnson, who is an avid aficionado of the genre. This soul and Rhythm & Blues music of the late 1960s—1970s included artists such as The Spinners, Pattie Labelle, The Ojays, The Stylistics and Harold Melvin to name a few. It featured lush, orchestrated strings, woodwinds along with a rhythm band of drums, bass guitar and lead guitar. In this workshop, we will feature and discuss the songwriting process, text and musicianship that was created by Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff and Thom Bell.

This will be a class of singing, discussion, questions and creativity! Videos of the studio sessions and performances will also be shown for dialogue. So, sign up, enjoy, and give us your feedback. If popular, we may continue this format next semester and beyond, perhaps with a new theme each time.

Family Choir is literally for everyone. This is our version of a community choir, in which adults and kids of all ages and levels can have fun discovering the joy of all types of music by singing together in one group. This is our most open, casual group. Family members can sign up and sing together, but adults or kids may also sign up individually. There is no formal age limit, and all ability levels are accepted. Older kids for whom Concert Choir isn’t the right fit may find Family Choir to be an appealing option. Boys with changed voices can also join this group. As with our Youth Chorale, Family Choir songs are adapted to suit the group as a whole, and individual members take on roles within the group appropriate for their ability levels. And the director is happy to consider requests regarding which songs you’ll sing! There is no audition for this group, although the director may ask a new member to hum a few bars of something to get an idea of their voice type and range. Literally anyone who can follow along can join! Fall Semester 2021 is free for all, as a special incentive to try out our new format. Normally there are special rates for pairs of family members (e.g. a parent-child combo or couples), and for unlimited access for an entire family. Rehearsals are on Friday evenings, at a time when adults can get home from work, grab a quick dinner and join rehearsal, but still early enough to accommodate younger singers (and it’s not a school night). For this semester's Holiday Concert, Family Choir members will decide by group consensus whether they prefer to all perform together live onstage (unvaccinated singers would perform while wearing masks), or perform with vaccinated singers live onstage accompanying pre-recorded videos by the unvaccinated singers, or make one uniform video-only virtual choir presentation to be shown at the live concert.

Due to the mixed-age nature of this group, all members would likely not be vaccinated so the default rehearsal format will be Zoom. However, at the discretion of the group, all may decide to occasionally mix in some in-person rehearsals over the course of the semester, following appropriate COVID-19 protocols. Rehearsals this Fall will be Fridays 6:30-7:15 via Zoom, with potential discretionary rehearsals at the Noyes Cultural Arts Center.

Under normal circumstances, rehearsals would be Fridays, 6:30-7:45 at the Noyes Cultural Arts Center.
