A Conversation with Michelle Duster, author of Ida B. the Queen

Frances Willard House Museum

Ida B Wells’s story is more resonant today than ever. Wells’s life’s work was dedicated to the fight for racial justice. She challenged systems, exposed truths, and committed herself to those who did not have power. IDA B. THE QUEEN: The Extraordinary Life and Legacy of Ida B. Wells is the inspiring new biography of this revolutionary figure, written by her great-granddaughter, Michelle Duster. Duster’s extensive research on Wells’s life and career complements her own story of self-discovery and activism. IDA B. THE QUEEN details Wells’s journey from ferocious teen to pioneering journalist to anti-lynching crusader, relayed in the intimate and introspective voice of a family member. Join the Frances Willard House Museum online on Sunday, March 28th at 4 pm for a conversation between Michelle Duster and Lori Osborne, Frances Willard House Museum Director, as they explore Duster’s work to recover Wells’ story and ensure her legacy is not forgotten. They will also delve into issues uncovered in the 2019 Truth Telling Project, where the museum explored the 1890s conflict between Frances Willard and Ida B. Wells. And they will discuss how important it is not only to ensure that women’s stories are not forgotten but told in the landscape of our world, including in museums and public art projects. Michelle Duster is a writer, speaker, professor, and champion of racial and gender equity. In the last dozen years, she has written, edited, or contributed to eleven books. She co-wrote the popular children’s history book, Tate and His Historic Dream; coedited Shifts and Michelle Obama’s Impact on African American Women and Girls; and edited two books that include the writings of her great-grandmother, Ida B. Wells. She has written articles for Essence, Refinery29, HuffPo, Teen Vogue, and The North Star. Lori Osborne is Executive Director of the Center for Women’s History and Leadership - which includes the Frances Willard House Museum and the WCTU Archives. She also directs the Evanston Women’s History Project at the Evanston History Center.
